While vaccines are designed to protect against diseases, there have been rare cases where certain vaccines have been associated with paralysis. One of the most notable examples is the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which in very rare instances can cause vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). VAPP occurs when the weakened virus in the vaccine mutates and regains its ability to cause disease.
