Plasmodium falciparum is one of the five species of parasitic protozoa that cause malaria in humans. It is the most lethal form of the parasite, responsible for the majority of severe malaria cases and deaths worldwide. P. falciparum is transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.
